I really couldn't be bothered with completing the whole Pokédex in any other game until I played Black 2, where all the small improvements managed to keep me motivated all the way through unlike before. When I switched to White temporarily to catch some exclusive Pokémon, I just kept noticing the little things that weren't there before and was already missing them. There's one more fantastic addition that you didn't mention but I think that's postgame, so I won't spoil it.

Comment by Phoenom, on 19.01.2013 at 10:32

Got myself a copy of White 2 earlier this week and just beat the last gym leader, thought I'd post my impressions. :)

Generally with each new mainline Pokemon game that comes out, visuals are improved, new side-games like Contests are added, and things are streamlined, so calling each new game the best yet isn't that much of an honour anymore because that's what we've come to expect. But Jesus Christ, there is no better way to describe White 2 as anything but the best one yet; I thought Black and White refined and improved the formula, but this one takes the Relay Baton and blasts off on a rocket.

I suppose it's more the little things that add up to make the best Pokemon game I've played yet, but as the first sequel I really wish they did this more instead of those third versions we've had before.

The animation. So, so good. The fact that all opponent sprites are animated not just the important NPCs is a subtle improvement but a welcome one nonetheless.

Bag organization. The spare room section is a godsend for frequently used items and combining it with the Y quick-select functions utterly decimates any frustration I used to have with it. Being able to immediately use a repel again after it runs out is just wonderful.

The Music. There are very few Pokemon games that have less than stellar music, but even if the majority are remixes of Black and White tracks, they are true ear-candy. The Gym Leader music in particular might just become my favourite Pokemon track ever.

The new locations. Being a sequel I was expecting to be simply revisiting older locations maybe in a different order, but thus far there have been more newer places than old, which is awesome. Thanks to that the entire region, which was always pretty darn big to begin with, is now ridiculously huge. It wouldn't surprise me if my Activity log reached triple digits with this game.

Pokemon world championships. Finally, an enjoyable yet still competitive way to test your team's strength in a handheld Pokemon game. Not just for the music remixes when you face certain opponents, but the fact that it doesn't take forever like the Battle Subway.

Returning Pokemon. I appreciated what Black and White did by starting fresh, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't have the biggest grin on my face when I saw Riolu and Mareep pop up early on.
What a game. Good God. If X and Y are anything like this, then...

Comment by SuperLink, on 16.12.2012 at 22:15
Oh Christ that's awful :c I get so attached to each Pokémon team that I leave them on their original cart incase I ever want to pick it up again so I know how you feel.

And yeah a bunch of games like the WiiU and VLR have come to distract me from Pokémon too.. BW2 is definitely a great Pokémon game but it came at a bad time (and also highlights all of the series' agedness and shortcomings!)

Comment by Ultima, on 16.12.2012 at 22:03

Not really played BW2 since the latest WoW expansion came out. It doesn't help that I have lost White and am rather upset about losing my team that I have been building since Ruby and Sapphire.( Edited 16.12.2012 21:03 by Ultima )

Comment by SuperLink, on 16.12.2012 at 16:47

Still just barely into postgame, I've been so busy with Uni that I've only had time for one or two games every now and then (for me that's been VLR and hopping around on the WiiU)

Still though I finished it and the postgame content is certainly impressive.. but I still don't think BW2 is a Platinum beater unfortunately ;) if only because there are some features removed from Gen4 that should really be around (Gym Leader rematches please)

Also I love Join Avenue! Currently trying to find a wild Dragonite during my quest to catch absolutely everything in the wild :P it's agonizing!

Comment by Ultima, on 31.10.2012 at 19:18

I dislike Rotation and Triple battles. Apart from that, enjoying the game. 16 hours played and about to fight Drayden.

Comment by SuperLink, on 25.10.2012 at 18:46

Wow that was fast.. :P I mean I have been really busy but I only just got to Mistralton/Skyla town.

Still not sure what I think of BW2 in comparison to Platinum, the very concept of a sequel which expands the region and gives it bits of newness rather than making you play through the same game again updated is definitely a better idea than Third Versions, howeveerrrr....

Sinnoh as a region and lots of things about Platinum were just very very great to me, I don't even like D/P that much, Platinum makes them unplayable to me! Though I do love the new Pokémon more than a lot of Gen4 ones, a lot of Unova's Routes (and Route music) is boring, there are no Gym Leader rematches, etc etc.. little things like that.
Of course I may change my mind ;) but so far while I'm loving BW2Â a lot Platinum is still my favourite Pokémon game I think.

PS. I was talking with a friend the other day about how many good features they removed from Gen5 and it's just weird? For example Secret Bases, I adored them, and the fact that if multiple trainers see you at once it can become a double battle, why isn't that in anymore? They could do it with Triple Battles too! :P

Comment by SirLink , on 21.10.2012 at 20:31

I've just beaten the game and I have to say, it's a LOT better than Yellow, Crystal, Emerald and Platinum were as third instalments of a generation. Most of the time you're actually going through completely different or heavily changed areas and almost all if not all gyms are new though there are only two new gym leaders themselves. The story itself also takes you to different and new places than Black/White, obviously.

I did try to go everywhere possible while I was going through the main adventure but quite a few places weren't accessible at all and I've barely scratched the surface of all the bonus stuff (Movies, Join Avenue, World Tournament etc.) they have in the game. I'm aiming for the full Pokédex and possibly the highest Medal rank if I feel like losing the rest of my sanity. I have pretty much every generation available to trade from with my DS and 3DS, so it's really just a matter of time.

Gotta Catch 'Em All!

Comment by Ifrit XXII, on 20.10.2012 at 16:25

I've just reached the Join Avenue on White 2. My team:

Lv 20 Servine
Lv 20 Jolteon
Lv 19 Rufflett
Lv 19 Growlithe
Lv 19 Psyduck
Lv 19 Deino

Loving some of the little details such as the Habitat feature on the Pokedex and the achievement medals. :)Â

Comment by SirLink , on 20.10.2012 at 08:41

I just got the fourth badge last night in Black 2 and my team so far is Dewott Lv28, Litwick Lv30, Archen Lv29, Excadrill Lv34 and Tynamo Lv29. Hoping to get my final Pokémon fairly soon, I think I should be able to go to Driftveil City next. I should note that I breeded and traded all Pokémon except my starter from my copy of White, simply because I wanted a full Gen V team and almost all of my choices had pretty crappy availability. I didn't want to use Oshawott at first but it's still the best Water type of Gen V for my playstyle.

I'm really loving the game so far. Some new features like the Pokémon movies or Join Avenue are actually pretty cool but I really love little details, like getting asked if you want to use another repel, weather effects now being displayed on the touch screen instead of interrupting the fight each turn and the habitat list, which will be especially useful for getting the full Pokédex this time around.
