Flight of Angels: Splice OST

When it comes to puzzle games, music can get tricky. It was perhaps Tetris that nailed down the perfect formula: electronic arrangements of classical and folk music, designed to inspire critical thinking and not distract the player from their goal. Flight of Angels is the soundtrack to Splice, composed by Cipher Prime’s in-house composer, Dain Saint, and aims to do just that.

Splice‘s score consists of piano tracks. The tunes are non-intrusive, yet emotional and active. Sweeping piano rhythms inspire images of angels in flight, or maybe just biological cells being pushed and pulled into place. One complaint is that the tracks don’t separate themselves from each other. Each is named after a different angel, but none carries its own noticeably unique personality. The music is beautiful, but the tracks sort of blend together, each sounding similar to the last. It’s clear each song is a different track, but just barely.

While the songs sound similar, the soundtrack doesn’t feel repetitive. In a way it feels less like seven short tracks and more like one long backing tune, but it doesn’t outstay its welcome. On the contrary, as a whole it’s a relaxing, moody soundtrack.

Cubed3 Summary

Despite the lack of major variation, Flight of Angels does a perfect job sounding beautiful and emotional, making itself present within the game but never getting in the way. Music could have easily been an afterthought in a puzzle game like this, but Flight of Angels has a definite quality and polish to it.
