The long‑running board‑game‑style series has always been a domestic powerhouse in Japan, especially the previous two multi-million selling Switch entries, but this sequel felt like a genuine step up in both scale and presentation.
The demo highlighted the series’ trademark loop: roll dice, travel across Japan by rail, buy properties, and out‑earn rivals. What made this version stand out was the sheer scope. Konami confirmed that the full release will feature around 1,000 stations and more than 6,000 properties, nearly triple the content of the 2020 entry. The subtitle reflects the expanded map, which now splits into East Japan and West Japan regions, each with its own routes and quirks. Even in the short demo available at TGS, the board felt expansive, with new paths encouraging experimentation.
Visually, the Switch 2 build looked crisp. Character art popped with bold outlines, while the board itself was more detailed than ever, with animated trains and seasonal effects adding charm. The hands-on experience also showcased the new “My Town” system, which allows players to register their own hometowns and see them represented on the board. This feature drew plenty of attention on the show floor, with attendees excitedly searching for their local stations. Gameplay remained accessible, even for non-Japanese speakers. Dice rolls and property purchases kept the pace brisk, while event cards injected chaos at just the right moments. The balance between strategy and luck has always been the series’ hook, and here it felt finely tuned. Even newcomers could grasp the basics within minutes, yet the competitive edge was sharp enough to keep veterans engaged.
Konami confirmed a 13th November 2025 release in Japan for both Switch 2 and Switch. The cartridge is region‑free, but the text is Japanese‑only, and no global release has been announced so far. There is, however, potential exciting precedent: Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban! received an Asia Edition in 2024 that included English, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese support. That marked the first time the series officially offered English, even if it was limited to East and Southeast Asia rather than a full Western launch. With that step already taken, there is at least some hope that Momotaro Dentetsu 2 could follow a similar path.
