Hurry Up Hedgehog! Review

There are a few board game collections out on DS, but they all tend to include similar things. Chess, checkers, some that have Scrabble or Monopoly…all well and good, classic games, but wouldn’t you rather try out some different board games on your little console? Apparently that’s what Oxygen thought when they opted to bring out Hurry Up Hedgehog!, an adaptation of a board game you probably haven’t played before. Does it live up to its namesakes and head in front of the pack, though, or is this hedgehog destined to become an unsightly mess in the road?

Those are the basics, but there are a lot of random options and rule variations to customise your game, such as ‘doping’ which eliminates the first piece to get over to the other side meaning the game reverses for a while as you desperately try to not hurry up for fear of losing a piece, or stacking multiple pieces on one space rather than shunting. You can also set the playfield to be tubular so that you can move from the top lane to the bottom lane in one sideways-shuffling move. If you enjoy the game, we’re sure the number of options available will keep you busy for a while.

That is, if you can work out how to set the options. The menus are pretty well laid out, but the method of selecting options can be a little dodgy as it only tells you what they are with pictures and a very vague description on the top screen. With a little trial and error you’ll find your preferences, but it could have been made easier. Overall the presentation is quite basic, with visuals that would not be out of place on the GBA or in a Flash game, but they serve their purpose

Cubed3 Rating

If you're a fan of board games, give it a go; if not, be a little more cautious. Hurry Up Hedgehog! is a nice little board game adaptation that offers some fun and challenge, but without a more expanded single player mode it's difficult to wholly recommend, unless you have some friends that enjoy the game too that can engage you in rounds of pit-abuse-based multiplayer.
