Keychron V6 Max QMK Wireless Custom Mechanical Keyboard

Keychron V6 Max QMK Wireless Custom Mechanical Keyboard Review

by Cassey Lo Reniva 16 October 2025 0

The Keychron V6 Max QMK Wireless Custom Mechanical Keyboard is a full‑size mechanical keyboard that refuses to compromise. With QMK/VIA programmability, hot‑swappable switches, and tri‑mode connectivity, it is designed to satisfy both enthusiasts and professionals who want a custom typing experience without losing everyday practicality.

Design and Build

The V6 Max is a full‑size 100% layout with 105 keys in the UK ISO configuration. It sits firmly in place thanks to its 1.67 kg weight and reinforced aluminium top plate, which gives the plastic chassis a reassuring solidity. While the case lacks the premium feel of Keychron’s all‑aluminium Q‑series, the build quality is still robust enough to withstand heavy daily use. Cubed3’s video review (below) highlights that this ISO layout version also incorporates sound‑absorbing foam and a gasket‑mount design. These additions reduce acoustic resonance and deliver a softer, quieter typing experience, making the board feel more flexible and comfortable over long sessions. Keychron offers the V6 Max with several switch options, and the Gateron Jupiter Reds, for instance, highlight the board’s smooth, linear character. They are light to actuate, making them ideal for fast typists and gamers, and the hot‑swappable sockets mean you can easily experiment with tactile or clicky alternatives. The double‑shot PBT keycaps resist shine and wear, while the south‑facing RGB LEDs illuminate the legends clearly and support 22 lighting effects for personalisation.

Connectivity and Compatibility

The V6 Max’s tri‑mode connectivity is one of its strongest assets. Wired USB‑C ensures stability, Bluetooth 5.1 allows pairing with up to three devices, and the 2.4 GHz dongle provides low‑latency performance suitable for gaming. In fact, as the video below notes, the 2.4 GHz mode supports a 1,000 Hz polling rate, giving it the responsiveness expected from dedicated gaming boards. Switching between Windows, macOS, and Linux layouts is seamless thanks to a physical toggle, and VIA software makes remapping and macro creation straightforward. This flexibility is a major reason the V6 Max stands out. Many full‑size boards at this price point force you to choose between wired reliability and wireless convenience, but here you get both. Keychron even includes an extra set of system‑specific keycaps for both Windows and macOS users. A built‑in magnetic slot at the top of the keyboard provides neat storage for the wireless receivers, ensuring they are always within reach.

Customisation and Software

The inclusion of QMK/VIA support elevates the V6 Max beyond a standard productivity keyboard. Every key can be remapped, layers can be created, and macros can be programmed without relying on proprietary software. For enthusiasts, this level of control is expected; for newcomers, the drag‑and‑drop interface makes it accessible. As the video above notes, the Keychron Launcher app provides another route for customisation, giving users a straightforward way to adjust lighting, remap keys, and fine‑tune the board without diving into QMK or VIA if they prefer a simpler approach. The hot‑swappable PCB extends this ethos to the hardware itself. Switches can be swapped in seconds, encouraging experimentation and ensuring the keyboard can evolve with your preferences. Combined with the RGB lighting and durable PBT keycaps, the V6 Max feels like a platform rather than a fixed product.

Everyday Performance

In daily use, the V6 Max delivers a smooth and consistent typing experience. The pre‑lubed stabilisers reduce rattle on larger keys, and the Jupiter Reds provide a light, responsive feel. The 4000mAh battery is another highlight, lasting up to 300 hours with backlighting off or around 100 hours with moderate lighting enabled. That stamina makes it a dependable wireless option, although the size and weight mean it is better suited to a permanent desk setup than frequent travel.

Cubed3 Summary

The Keychron V6 Max QMK Wireless Custom Mechanical Keyboard is a versatile, enthusiast‑grade keyboard that balances customisation with accessibility. Its tri‑mode connectivity, QMK/VIA programmability, hot‑swappable switches, and thoughtful extras like gasket mounting and sound‑absorbing foam,  make it one of the most adaptable full‑size boards in its class. The typing feel is excellent out of the box, and the long battery life ensures it can keep up with demanding workflows. There are trade‑offs. The plastic case lacks the premium finish of Keychron’s higher‑end Q‑series, and the full‑size layout will not appeal to those who prefer compact boards. At nearly 1.7 kg, it is also far from portable. However, these limitations are outweighed by the flexibility, reliability, and sheer value on offer. For professionals who want a single keyboard that can handle work, play, and everything in between, the V6 Max is a compelling choice. It may not be flawless, but it is consistently impressive where it matters most.
