Consoles, phones, or laptops – they all are quite costly nowadays and deserve protection; especially handheld items that often travel are affected. ZAGG has made it its mission to protect mobile devices and has just released a protective case for Nintendo Switch and Switch Lite. Cubed3 had the chance to try the Gear4 Kita Grip Lite recently for Nintendo Switch Lite. Is it really as protective as it claims to be?
First impressions matter, and this case does not disappoint. The packaging looks attractive and neat, while still remaining compact. Pulling out the case itself, it was clear from the start that this is an incredibly sturdy case. The material is relatively hard and only somewhat flexible. This becomes a bit of an issue when trying to wrangle the console into it – it’s probably still easier than trying to dress a wailing baby, though. Once the console is in, it sits snugly and safely in the case, and the sturdy feeling of it provides a sense of security. That’s definitely a big plus, but the worry to accidentally break something off of the console when putting it in or taking it out of the case remains.
The Nintendo Switch Lite without a case already sits nicely in-hand (definitely easier to hold than the original), however the grips from the Gear4 Kita Grip Lite just feel a little more fulfilling and comfortable. They really provide something to actually grab. This may not be for everyone, but for those who easily get hand cramps from clutching their Switch Lite, using this case may be worth a try.One downside is that the case changes the overall shape of the console quite significantly. This means that bags bought to hold the console while travelling will no longer fit. A way around this is to take the Switch Lite out of the Gear4 Kita Grip Lite case and take it, plus a bag, on travels. This isn’t ideal because not only does this add a lot of baggage but, as mentioned above, wrangling the console in and out of the case is pretty difficult. Alternatively, it would be nice to have a suitable travel bag that fits the console with the case on.
The case is currently available in a clear colour, with the gips on the sides in grey. In the future, though, it would be nice to see other Switch Lite colours available for the grips. Nevertheless, grey is quite neutral and also looks pleasant in combination with another colour, so this is only a minor problem.Additionally, the case comes with a complementary screen protector, which is always appreciated. It is designed to absorb shock and adds an extra layer of protection to the screen.Finally, a great little piece of information is that the case itself has been made from 52% renewable resources, working towards sustainability. In today’s world, this is an important step and deserves some recognition.
