DSi/DS Browser Speed Test Comparisions on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

With the DSi Browser out, fans have been comparing its speed and functionality to Opera's regular DS browser software.

The DSi takes advantage of its additional memory and processing power by offering a downloadable browser that doesn't require memory packs or DS software cards.

But can the experience really be improved? It seems like it, with a comparision video of the browsers in action:

Thanks to GoNintendo.

I can't see the vid at work, but you'd certainly hope so! More RAM, an updated version of the browser that actually works properly, plus other tweaks that Opera wanted to include...ANYTHING would be an improvement over the original add-on! I think the fact that Nintendo actually pulled the DS Browser from retail spoke volumes.

Yur, definitely loads faster and functions a lot more efficiently, in the vid the DS Browser is given a head start, loses by about 30/40 seconds - and still keeps going!

LOL and inflicts massive damage!! XD oh lol!! but yeah good work, nice load times on the DSi, very impressive. Smilie

Much faster, looks like surfing the web on DSi will actually be useful rather then just a novelty.

Defo - tis good to have that feature, especially if net is needed pretty urgently.

DSi sports a 133 MHz Arm 11 CPU (as opposed to only 67Mhz Arm 9 on DS and DS Lite) and has a RAM of 16 Mbytes (only 4 Mbytes for the older two). Sure, the DS Browser came bundled with an additonnal RAM Pack that plugged in the GBA slot, but the transfer rate from an external RAM pack doesn\'t compare to internal, faster RAM i suppose.

Anyway, the DSi as more under the hood than the other two DS, so there\'s nothing too special about its integrated Browser to run faster.

Looks much faster. IGN was saying there wasn't much of a difference, but that was very noticeably faster.

I wonder if, or when, devs will start using the DSi's extra power for games?

I don't think there's a need, I mean the double sized carts used for ASH can't be that expensive can they? If devs really wanted to they could put those carts to use instead.

As for the DSi, it's pretty impressive, the PSP browser is awful so this is a +1 for the DS! iPod/iPhone are still faster though.

From this, I guess I'm still a bit interested in the DSi, I'll see what the other DSWare is like before considering purchase, but I still can't believe that price tag!

Superlink -- I'm talking about the faster CPU speed and higher RAM. With that sort of bump (double CPU and 4 times the RAM) we could see some significant improvements in DS games, which would be pretty cool. Imagine Mario Kart DS with all 8 people online with voice chat, something the current processor couldn't handle.

I doubt devs will use the extra power for a long time for fear of alienating the DS lite market, but in a few years this extra power could be exciting. Remember the difference the RAM pack for the N64 made? This is a significantly larger upgrade. Again, it just remains to be seen whether developers use it, or whether its just ends up being used to speed up the OS and web-browsing...

I'd imagine they'll just include a mode that takes advantage of the extra beef if you've got it. I can't see developers segregating DS users - that's a potential minefield. They'll just include modes 'only available on Nintendo DSi'.

Less posty, more gamey.

"can't see developers segregating DS users - that's a potential minefield."

exactly.
very bad idea.

Any of you browsed on the PSP? You can feel your arteries hardening just getting Google to load. I for one am hoping for a solid online experience or I just will not use it and leave it chained in the basement like a ginger child.

Aye aye. Even worse than the original DS Browser, and I didn't think it was possible!

At least the PSP has tabs, but what good does that do if it takes half an hour to load any page or single image!

Which is why I said:

But perhaps in a few years when the DSi really takes off? Everyone knows that it wouldn't be a good idea right off the bat.

I think what Artmonkey said is probably the most likely -- DSi specific modes or features.

I didn't find the original too slow, especially with images turned off. Looking forward to the upgraded DSi version.
