Only Story Written for Sonic 4: Episode 2 on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

SEGA's digital brand manager for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has confirmed that only the story has been written for episode 2.

Ken Balough joined the SEGA forums yesterday and was quizzed on the development of future episodes of Sonic 4 and whether the studio would be revising things like the game's questionable physics engine. Currently only the story has been written.

SEGA are evaluating if the next game will be built ground-up, use elements of episode 1's engine or just be a straightforward continuation.

Remember these decisions come with a cost associated to them; so it’s not so cut & dry. But we are hearing you’re [sic] guys concerns.

"Let's pump in more cash and sell two parts of a single game. It's like having a Mega Man game with only four bosses to fight against. Or including only four worlds in Super Mario World. Geez, aren't we Sega people great and fair to it's huge fanbase?"

Why not sell episode two with episode one? It's not like it will be a huge difference. Might as well call it Sonic 5...

Mario, Mega Man and Rayman FTW!!!

Episode 1 has as many stages as Sonic 3.

I bet people didn't get angry about Sonic 3 having that little amount of stages.
No need to get your knickers in a twist, it's completely reasonable.

I think what was better about Sonic 3 is that it had more zones.

I much prefer:

6 Zones with 2 acts each to
4 Zones with 3 acts each.

Anyways, I want episode 1 to be released already. Since the designs are mostly rehashed from Sonic 1 and 2, I want to see the new stuff they come up with for the next episode.

They way I see it they'll be using feedback from Episode 1 while they create Episode 2, which would explain why it hasn't really taken off yet.

As for the stage amount I agree, but you can't exactly call Ep1 a tiny game when it's about the same length as Sonic 3.

Yeah I agree with you that it's not exactly tiny. I think it's just the idea of there being only 4 full zones that makes it sound small.

Sega's Ken answered some of my questions. He said that the HA reticule cannot be turned off though they may add a way to turn it off once the other episodes arrive.

He was also finally honest about the HA in that it isn't completely optional (In interviews, he said you could play through the game without it). I told him that they need to be more creative with the HA as they seem to have used it mostly to get past enemy chains.

Just played through Sonic 3 with Knuckles and some of the levels are really long. I hope that is the case with Sonic 4.

With Tails and Knuckles most likely returning, I hope they find a way to add alternative routes for them in episode 1. From what I've seen, episode 1 seems to have been made without future episodes in mind. Will be weird to see how they both play with S4's physics. Smilie

I certainly hope so. I have yet to see anything like the boulders from Angel Island Act 1 that only Knuckles can break through, even though he wasn't in standalone S3, for example.
