Nintendo Confirm Wii Successor; First Look at E3 on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

In a similar style to how 3DS was announced, and with rumours charging through the pipes of the Internet at a speed that would make Captain Falcon blush, Nintendo have put out a small press release confirming that a Wii successor does exist - and it's going to be present at E3 2011.

Masters of revealing as little information as possible, Nintendo coyly say absolutely nothing of its capabilities, only that it is due for release sometime in 2012, and that it will be shown in playable form at E3, being held this year June 7th - 9th, along with more specifications. Of course, this could mean that it's playable on-stage and not for general consumption, and "more specifications" could mean anything that Nintendo wants it to.

The full release can be found here.

How much do you think Nintendo will show at E3?

I'll just go ahead and write what I wrote in the N6 topic.

One part of me is happy because it's not that long anymore till all those rumour makers can STFU for the most part but I'm also worried about Skyward Sword and the other remaining Wii games now. I really hope that the unveiling of the successor won't completely steal the show from them. :/ It would probably be better if they show it at the very end of the presentation.

Regarding what they show, I'm really not sure. They sure as hell can't show a Zelda tech demo running with Skyward Sword still around but generally the Wii games at the conference won't benefit if they do. Hard to tell how they're gonna do it at this point. Smilie

PS: Oh noes, my post count is now 666. D: Must..suppress...evil...force. *uses Triforce of Courage*

EDIT: LOL, I didn't know that it actually shows the title I put for my post if someone replies to that. Smilie

Interesting that they will be showing it in playable form, yet releasing it in 2012. Generally the consoles are revealed in playable form at E3 and then launched before the holidays that fall.

Showing it in playable form now and releasing in 2012 will canabalize Wii sales and take away from some of the excitement of new Wii games.
(EDIT2: I realized they actually just did this with the 3DS, so maybe not).

(Not that I'm complaining, because I can't wait to see what Nintendo has in store for us)

EDIT: Actually I am complaining because it is going to be torturous having to wait that long after seeing it.

Blimey! Playable form? Nice Smilie Definitely can't wait to see what Nintendo have in store for us now - the beast is coming!

They'll probably show a tech demo with Mario at the very least, and a few other playable tidbits. I think a third party showreel with developer comments will likely be shown, highlighting big names - at the very least from Capcom, Square Enix, Sega, Namco Bandai, Retro Studios etc.

Still do hope Zelda is a huge part of the show as you guys say - SkyWard Sword has been pretty tame until now. A couple of trailers and a pretty basic playable demo - we need a beefed up Zelda of epic proportions. It has been 25 years since the first Zelda and we're still stuck with a simple adventure!

Can't wait for the first specs!

I think the 3DS is starting this kinda trend - was announced prior to E3 back in 2010, then playable to the press at E3 and a few months after, finally hitting stores (in the West) this year.

It'll probably see a similar pattern with the Wii2/N6/Cafe - very brief announcement/details before E3, playable tech demos and games at E3 then a worldwide release sometime next year.

I reckon third parties will have a load to show.

3DS Code 2578-3122-0744

Cool! Hope it's not shit!

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

We're going to have a lot of reporting to do this year, I wonder how they're going to reveal it? If the controller really does have a screen in it will they have hundreds of beautiful women handing them out for a massive LAN multiplayer? (that would be awesome).

But I am looking forward to it, although I don't play games anywhere near as much as I used to.

Must admit, I'm still hoping for a controller withought a screen, or with a very small one.
Splitting backwards compatibility with the Wiimote/nunchuck is a huge mistake, imho, and I just cant see it having a screen in that form factor.
It also jacks up the controller (and thus system) cost a heck of a lot.Doubly so if they want two different controllers with the system.

Better to have a split controller, analogue stick eachside and improved motion tech. (+speaker/mic too....why not).

I love the wiimote/nunchuck...it needs huge refinements but not a whole new form!

And to be honest, I too worry this is all too soon. The Wii should have had a lasat great wave of games at least, and thats where the focus should be.

Well, I was wrong. Stars for everyone in the N6 topic. Smilie

I'm really surprised, but I'm incredible excited. I really hope Nintendo have made something special this time.

It would have been really difficult for the wii to have an amazing last year. Nintendo had a good run last year but they dont have enough devs to keep a good number of games coming out every year. Third parties just arent pulling their weight.

THe move to a more classic control scheme is probably to make it easier for multi platform games. But I agree that the wii remote setup needs to be refined and reused.

Stronger speakers motion sensing, triggers, another analogue stick, wireless nun chuck would allow for more meaningful use of the tech. But they would have to bundle both into the box. I just pray they arent going to use the current MP controller from left over wii's. THe thing does not stay synced for mega long periods. And I have found the nun chuck time after time starts to struggle to communicate through the remote.

A screen will be incredible. Just think of the possibilities:
- Being able to select plays in Madden without your opponent seeing
- Select items in Zelda on the fly without entering menus.

By the time this new system comes out in 2012, it will have marked the longest period between console launches for Nintendo.

Don't think of this as Wii Mote 2.0, judging by what is being said this is a whole new way to control games. The Wiimote and numchuk will only be used for Wii 1 games, I highly doubt it will be supported as a default control method for Wii 2 games. Also the tech for the Wiimote had already been produced and in production so implementation of the Wii Mote control method into Wii 2 won't be expensive.

Oh yes because most normal people can use dual analog sticks and a pointing device at the same time. The whole purpose of the Wiimote in the first place was to remove one of the analog sticks in favor of a pointing device. I don't think the new controller will be used as a pointing device, it would be overkill with the dual analog sticks.
