Insomniac Not Working on Wii U Games, Consider Hardware More Current Gen on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

American studio Insomniac has confirmed that it's not working on Nintendo Wii U, but still considers the hardware current gen.

The studio, known for Spyro the Dragon, Rachet & Clank, Resistance and Fuse, has been working on a number of Wii U projects, according to CEO Ted Price on Reddit.

"I'd consider more current gen", Price noted when describing the Wii U hardware, "but we're not working on games for it". The studio are also looking towards the PS4 given Sony's greater openness for indie development and also keeping an eye on the Microsoft side of the industry.

What are your thoughts on Price's comment - is the Wii U more current gen than next gen?

Well...at least their working on games for it...If Iwata wants to back up his claims that it's not underpowered he better bring it at E3 and beyond. Can't see miracles happening at 40W power draw though. Please prove me wrong Nintendo.

It's definitely current gen according to everyone who attended GDC this year.

Anything that's released is current-gen in my eyes. I don't get all the commotion about it... We all know that the Wii U's strength isn't raw power. Does it matter whether we call it next or current gen?

It's current gen, but it's high-end current gen, and performs very well when games are tailored to it.

Apparently, developers don't care about that anymore, they just want to do straight ports as quickly and cheaply as possible. I remembered a few developers praising the Gamecube way back when because of how customizable it was on the programming front; it seems most of them have changed their minds.

CORRECTION: Sorry folks, misquote. The studio aren't working on Wii U titles.

Just looked Insomniac up, and this doesn't surprise me. They've made games almost exclusively for PS2 and PS3. Fuse is their first game also coming to 360, and it's published by - you guessed it - Electronic Arts.

Insomniac is the company that makes... let me google it, just a second... Spyro, Ratchet & Clank, and Resistance. They haven't made a game that wasn't on a Playstation system... hold on, let me check... ever.

Hrm...

Haha, funny considering all their games are coming to 720 this gen, according to their CEO on Develop Online. Of course it's current gen, even the best looking game we've seen, X, looks current gen in every possibly way. There's literally no high quality physics on show in the games trailer, no soft-body physics and high quality animation for huge beast NPC's. Great art with clunky last gen graphics and physics.

Nintendo are a generation behind in creating HD graphics assets, what makes this worse is that the other console developers will be hitting their stride with glee with PS4 and 720.

Actually, he only said three of the four games they're making are coming to  XBOX 720. One must be a Sony exclusive...

Those monsters did have poor animation, but then so did Xenoblade's. The game will be still be good or great, even if the graphics will be poor by the standards that will be set in 'Q4, by the other two consoles.

Looking forward to the new Spyro.

Nintendo of America should reach out to these guys, since they are in their region.
