Miyamoto is keen to revisit far-away worlds with the Super Mario Galaxy series one day.
There have been two Super Mario Galaxy titles so far, both for Nintendo Wii, that introduced players to an array of intriguing and unique 3D platforming ideas.
Following on from the duo, Nintendo has opted to creating 3D Mario titles that are perhaps more traditional in nature like Super Mario 3D World for Wii U, but where does that leave the future of Super Mario Galaxy?
Speaking to Eurogamer, Miyamoto noted how with 3D titles, even as early as Super Mario 64, "there was a lot of feedback about motion sickness with the 3D or maybe us making it too difficult."
He recalled how Nintendo opted for a more traditional approach where anyone can play, explaining why the studio started up the New Super Mario Bros. franchise.
We're always thinking, is there a middle ground where people who do enjoy the 3D worlds of Galaxy and those who enjoy New Super Mario Bros. can both enjoy it? We're always looking at those opportunities. On the other hand, me and [Yoshiaki] Koizumi-san, director of Galaxy, are always looking to challenge Galaxy and do another 3D action title. However we can't make so many games at once in parallel.
But as the hardware technology gets better and advances, I think there will be a lot of opportunity for both options.
Would a Super Mario Galaxy 3 work, or should Nintendo venture down a different path for 3D titles?
