Ever watch Dragon Ball Z? Zelda: Tri Force Heroes almost had fused characters.
Hiromasa Shikata, the chap behind the new Nintendo 3DS game as director, explained to IGN this week about how the team had originally experimented with different Link configurations before settling with the triple threat.
However, Nintendo had also conceived an idea where two players would fuse together, with the Links only able to "go in one direction if both players wanted to go in that direction," he mused. "Unfortunately, that made the gameplay very hard, so we had to take that mechanic out."
Shikata also reiterated past comments on how a four-player option had been considered, but three was just right for the totem mechanic. Interestingly, the concept of three characters stacked up on each other came from one of the development staff showing him a photo of a circus act where performers stand on top of one another. "Looking at that picture, I thought that was a good way to use the 3D feature on the 3DS," he said.
Do you think Nintendo should have pursued this fusion mechanic?
