Super Mario Run Announced for Mobile on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

In a surprise announcement at the beginning of Apple's event today, Shigeru Miyamoto appeared on stage to reveal Nintendo's next mobile game, Super Mario Run.

The game is an endless running Mario game, where Mario runs continuously across familiar levels. Players have to tap on the screen to make Mario jump over obstacles and on enemies.

A second mode called Toad Rally allows you to compete against the high scores of friends and players from across the world. Toads can also be collected and added to your own customizable Mushroom Kingdom.

The simplified gameplay falls right in line with Nintendo's previously stated goal of using mobile to introduce players to their IP and games while keeping the full gaming experiences exclusive to Nintendo hardware.

The game will launch this holiday for a fixed price. Pay once and play all you want. It will be available on iOS first.

Bonus: It was also announced that Super Mario themed stickers will be available for iMessage when iOS 10 launches.

So surreal seeing Miyamoto and co appear on stage at an Apple Conference. Never thought I'd ever see that.

The game looks like the sort of Mario game I expected on a phone and it works best the way they've designed it, so you can play it with one hand. Probably fun in short bursts while waiting for some public transport.

Easy money. Probs good for a quick 5 minute blast now and then. I'm more saddened by the AC and Fire Emblem delays.

Yeah it was crazy.  When Tim Cook said something was missing.. or someone, i thought Miyamoto.  I was laughing out loud when i realized it WAS him haha.

Depressing in the extrame imho for Nintendo to release a "me too" like this on any platform.
Pure IP devaluing for a quick cash grab.

PokemonGo made so much sense - a IP that fit. Something not remotely close to anything most have played before. Couldn't be done elsewhere.

This? This is just "omg, release a mobile game with our IP and we make quick bucks". Smilie
Nintendos still a wealthy company. They dont need to do this, they can afford to be long and strategic. Dont let this be someones first "mario experience".

-sigh-
Maybe a Apple exclusivity bribe made it all worth it.

Aye, they're jumping on the bandwagon, but I think you have to consider what Nintendo hopes to gain out of unleashing a Mario runner on mobiles in the long run. End goal has to be getting mobile users onto NX in some capacity. Who knows if Super Mario Run holds a deeper link with the NX than we know? It's safe and easy cash, but it might just help the NX more than if they didn't do this.

I found this person's tweet highly amusing, however:

"We don't want to make a new F-Zero, we can't think of a creative direction for the series" "So here's New Super Mario Endless Runner"
