Nintendo News | Atari Confirms Dragonball Z on Revolution

By Adam Riley 24.04.2006 20

Updated - Atari has today confirmed what many had speculated due to the revelation in Japanese publication V-Jump. Check out the full Press Release below:

Atari, Inc. today announced that Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 is in development for Nintendo Revolution. Combining action, fighting and light role-playing game (RPG) elements, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 will send players into a rich story mode that spans the entire Dragon Ball, DBZ, and Dragon Ball GT series. Developed by NAMCO BANDAI Games Inc. / Spike, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 is slated to release during the 2006 holiday season.

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 takes the series' popular acrobatic and intense 3D flying and fighting dynamic and takes it to a whole new level with over 100 playable characters, 15 vast and vibrant 3D destructible environments, and nine different game modes, including single and multiplayer battles.

Matt Collins, Director of Marketing, Atari, Inc., said,

"The innovative controller featured with Nintendo Revolution is perfectly suited for Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2, which engages players with fast-paced fighting moves. Gamers will be able to play in a very physical way, mimicking several of the show's most popular character moves and pull off awesome combos and attacks."

In addition to the unprecedented number of characters, wide selection of massive 3D destructible environments and abundance of game modes, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 will feature in-game transformations, which players will be able to trigger in real-time, making battles even more dramatic and exciting than ever before. Using the Nintendo Revolution controller, players will be able to mimic signature moves as they are performed in the Dragon Ball Z animated series, such as Goku's Kamehameha, moving both hands to execute this devastating energy attack.

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 is set for release this holiday season. For more information on Dragon Ball Z video games, please visit http://www.atari.com/.

And as if that was not enough, Nintendo fans, this is the first time a Press Release has described the actual Nintendo Revolution. Read what is stated below:

About Nintendo Revolution

Nintendo's next system, code-named Nintendo Revolution, will feature a controller designed to be used with either one hand or two -- a first in the video game industry. When picked up and pointed at the screen, the controller gives a lightning-quick element of interaction, sensing motion, depth, positioning and targeting dictated by movement of the controller itself.

Certainly one to watch out for! Keep your eyes firmly glued to Cubed3 for further exciting updates...

Original Story -

Appearing on Revo.c4.fr, two scans from Japanese magazine V-Jump have emerged that seem to suggest a Revolution outing for the Dragonball Z games.

According to the scans, the game will be called Dragonball Z: Sparking Neo and will be appearing on Playstation 2 and Nintendo Revolution. 'Sparking' is what the Japanese use to refer to the games known over here as the 'Tenkaichi' Dragonball Z games, so a title more along those lines would be expected in Europe. A new character will be added from previous iterations, and the game was supposedly show-cased using a Gamecube.

Scans (click to enlarge):

It is also noted that screenshots shown in the second scan are from the PS2 version of the game. Quite how a fighting game, particularly one as fast paced as a Dragonball Z game, will work on Revolution is unknown at this time, but more information is likely to appear at E3.

Excuse me... but I know that Dragon Ball Z: Budakai 2 is already on the GC, now is this the same game? a port? Or is a brand new DBZ that will probably also coime to PS3 as well as PS2...?

I get confused, as the Budakai tournament in the manga comics is also called the "Tenkaichi Budakai" So I thought that it may have just been a long way of saying "Budakai 2" Smilie

That sounds fucking brilliant - hopefully it'll be as good as the classic Snes Hyper Dimension, now that was a quality game!

STP, it's a completely different game Smilie

Coolio, also, just to say, it's actually called the "Tenka'ichi Budakai" in the mangas, sorry for forgetting that essential "'" Smilie

Anywhoo, I'll prolly get this game, & maybe Budakai 3 for GC (when the port finally comes out!!!!)

Hold on a sec, wasn't there a massive arguement about how hard fighting games on Revo would be? I mean this has already been confirmed, so they must have SOME idea!! Smilie

I'm thinking of something like using two controllers, if this is anything to go by:
"players will be able to mimic signature moves as they are performed in the Dragon Ball Z animated series, such as Goku's Kamehameha, moving both hands to execute this devastating energy attack."
So you'll have two controllers, and moving each one corresponds with the same side(left or right) in game, and then using a button and moving will make you kick, and then quickly moving both of the controllers down next to you, making the charge motion, will make you power-up or something... hmmm

That actually sounds pretty good, will definitely wanna see how this pans out!

I had DBZ cards when I lived in france in '96. They were HUGE. DBZ sucks major ass though.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

How DARE you! Off with your head! Both of them!

Yeah this sounds pretty cool. However in the same article they mentioned that you would be able to transform during battle, something 'never done before'... I'm guessing they're just ignoring the first three Budokai games... >_>

Haha, good point! Smilie

STP, it was Ed Boon of Mortal Kombat fame that said he was 'unsure' of how the Rev controller would work for fighters...Hopefully this and Smash Bros will show people!

True, I remember in primary school we downloaded it onto the class computer andwould play it whenever we could, there would be tournaments and everyone had their favourite character. There would be 20 people packed into one corner watching the fights. To be back in primary school.

100 playable characters, that's phenominal!

It's really great, it's a much bigger selection even than DBZ:B3! & I thought THAT was big!! I wonder how they'll get so many characters in, it would be cool for some more female characters, & maybe a few from the original DragonBall series.

Dude, they should let Bulma use a gun or sommet Smilie

You damn right! Also, the visuals from the SNES game suited DBZ well.

I like the cell shading there using with the DBZ games, highlighting there quirky features makes them look completly like the series. Its the power moves that need to be looked at. Most games use them too much (Budokai especially). Buts its nice to have it confirmed. Beating one of the baddies over the face with the Revmote will be very pleasing to me! Smilie
