E3 2006 News | Square Enix Shows Heavy Nintendo Support

By Adam Riley 24.04.2006 23

Below is the Nintendo section of Square Enix's Press Release that was revealed just a short while ago:

Game Boy Advance

FINAL FANTASY V ADVANCE & FINAL FANTASY VI ADVANCE

The classic FINAL FANTASY games that premiered on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System are now making their way to the Game Boy Advance! Hot on the heels of FINAL FANTASY IV ADVANCE (now available in stores), FINAL FANTASY V ADVANCE and FINAL FANTASY VI ADVANCE will soon be available to handheld gamers. However, these titles are more than simple ports! Every aspect of the games has been reviewed and enhanced. Additionally, a host of brand-new elements have been seamlessly merged with the original games,
providing unexpected surprises for longtime fans. With new dungeons, new job classes, and other exciting features, both old-school players and
newcomers can enjoy these genre-defining FINAL FANTASY titles in a portable format!

The magic of the FINAL FANTASY classics is returning to gamers' hands and soon the wait will be over.

FINAL FANTASY V ADVANCE & FINAL FANTASY VI ADVANCE will both be released 2006. These titles have not yet been rated by the ESRB.

Nintendo DS System

Children of Mana

In ages past, an island called Illusia floated at the centre of the world. At the heart of the island towered an ancient, enormous tree that stretched up to the very heavens. For ages past, chaos and sorrow had engulfed the world until at last its salvation appeared in the form of a boy, a girl, and a holy sword. Time flowed on and peace returned. The sword
and the tree remained, and they soon came to be known as the Sword of Mana and the Mana Tree. Followers of the Mana Tree returned to Illusia as the world started slowly but surely down the path to recovery.

More Magic with the Eight Spirits! The eight elemental spirits are a staple of the Mana series. These powerful allies aid you with healing and special status effects. They can also unleash fearsome magic upon your foes.

Co-operative or Competitive Gameplay for Up to Four Players - The greatest innovation of this installment of the Mana series is allowing four players to advance the story and solve quests together while
maintaining the feel of an action RPG. Players' actions affect each other in a gameplay experience completely unlike previous action RPGS!

Children of Mana will be released 2006. This title has not yet been rated by the ESRB.

DRAGON QUEST HEROES: ROCKET SLIME

The latest game from the creative minds behind the 2005 RPG classic, Dragon Quest) VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, has arrived on the Nintendo DS. The hero of this brand-new action-adventure is a slime, one
of the most popular monsters from the Dragon Quest series. The game is set in the kingdom of Slimenia, a peaceful land that is suddenly invaded by a mysterious cartel called "the Plob," who then proceed to kidnap all the slimes in the capital city of Boingburg. Our protagonist, Rocket, is the only slime left behind, and must embark on a journey throughout Slimenia to save his friends and uncover the Plob's nefarious plot!

Bounce, Stretch, and Carry - The adventure stages consist of our hero bouncing and stretching, as
well as carrying various objects on his head, while solving the mysteries behind each area, and rescuing his captured slime friends along the way. Simple, streamlined controls allow players of all ages and skill levels to take part in the action with ease.

Fierce Tank Battles - Each adventure stage culminates in Rocket hopping aboard a colossal slime-shaped war machine called the Schleiman Tank and battling it out with the enemy's Monster Tanks. Customize tanks by collecting a vast array of weapons and items. Call upon allies, each with their own individual personality and abilities, to aid in the heated tank battles. Even shoot your fellow slimes so they can infiltrate and sabotage the enemy's Monster Tank! Pit tanks against a friend's in exciting player-vs.-player action, using the Nintendo DS wireless multiplayer game feature!

DRAGON QUEST HEROES: ROCKET SLIME will be released 2006. This title has not yet been rated by the ESRB.

FINAL FANTASY III

The only FINAL FANTASY that was never localised - the third installment of the original series - will finally reach North American shores! Lauded as "legendary" by the Japanese fan base, FINAL FANTASY III has been reborn, incorporating the latest in portable gaming technology. Using the features of the Nintendo DS to their fullest, FINAL FANTASY III
features graphics that have been reworked and remodeled in 3D, while maintaining the mythical FINAL FANTASY look and feel.

This is the fans' chance to complete the circle. The legend of FINAL FANTASY III is reborn.

FINAL FANTASY III will be released 2006. This title has not yet been rated by the ESRB.

This really is such a huge line-up for Square Enix. The Final Fantasy games that are coming will definitely light up the market, especially the fully reworked Final Fantasy III for the Nintendo DS. As long as Square Enix keeps focusing on how this has NEVER been released in the West, it will stop people getting confused with Final Fantasy VI, which was released as FFIII on the SNES due to Nintendo's crazy numbering system caused by a lack of faith to release all the FF games in the West.

Children of Mana was a given for a Western release, with many already touting a possible August / September release. But no confirmed date has been given. And it is great news to hear that both Final Fantasy V and VI will make a 2006 release. What will be interesting is just what is added to FFVI, since there is basically no graphical improvement from recent screens. The game looked gorgeous on the SNES and clearly does not require a major upgrade for the GBA release, so that means the focus must be on extra content. Time will tell...

And a great hurrah must go out for the second Slime Mori Mori game coming to US shores after the first GBA version missed out. The game received critical acclaim in Japan and sold something like 250,000-270,000 units on the Nintendo DS over the Christmas period and definitely deserved a Western release. Hopefully this risk means Nintendo will follow suit with its previously Japan-only games, such as Legend of Starfi 4, Mother 3 and Magical Vacation 2.

But it is not just Nintendo fans that will be over-joyed by the Square Enix release as the company has the following games on other platforms to look forward to:

PlayStation 2 - Dawn of Mana, Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria, Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus, Final Fantasy XI: Treasures of Aht Urhgan and Final Fantasy XII.

PlayStation Portable - Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth

E3 just got extremely hot...

I already have Final Fantasy IV, which is simply brilliant and made me so eager for more Square Enix goodness that I bought the Japanese version of Children of Mana, which is also very lovely indeed! Smilie

Final Fantasy III has to be mine... Smilie

Wow. That is one hot, hot selection of DS titles - can't wait to see and play more - esp FFIII.

Hmm, no sign of Crystal Chronicles DS (if that's still in progress - hopefully we'll see something!)

Is it me or does the PSP have jack all...

So no news on FFCC2? Smilie. Still, the rest looks good, and will be good for Nintendo fans and RPG fans! Smilie

FFCC DS will likely be early 2007 I'd say...linking up with the Revolution version. There's MORE than enough Final Fantasy loving this year on the GBA and DS...

PSP's FFVII is still not on the horizon it would seem...and VP: Lenneth is meant to be nothing more than an average port of the original VP from the PSone (no bad thing, but fans expected more from it).

Exactly what I wanna know! When I heard that there would be a DS version just after I started playing the GC one I was excited. Imagine how hot it would be to have multiplayer mayhem and ease of control on the sexy dual screens!

I need to eat an apple... touch the screen - no complex button bashing!

Heh, PS2 still has tons of support, I wonder how PS3 will do for Enix support? Anywhoo, it's great to see the support that GBA & DS have from Square, it's too bad that there are no GC titles though...

Well, all those games I basically knew about anyway, any chance of a Nintendo Square game I 'ent heard of? Possibly later in E3?

It Also looks like Nintendo's own Dragon Quest game will be a little bit "kiddied up" Smilie

EDIT: Ahh FF:CC on DS, I hope the Revo & DS version are both different, I also hope that there are a whole new bunch of characters to choose from, there wasn't enough choice on FF:CCGC I felt.

I've just bought Dragon Quest VIII today. Lovely, lovely game that it is. Smilie

Hmmm theres always the possibility Nintendo want SE to keep Crystal Chronicals for E3 as a suprise or somthin, cause they seem intent on keeping all the Rev software within there booth.

Dragon Quest VIII is one of my favourites games of the year. A simply spectacular game that blows, the still very impressive, DQVII out of the water.

If only Nintendo could get hold of the main DQ series, it would have Japan wrapped up. The success of FFIII will say a lot...and the legs that DQ Slime MoriMori had and Children of Mana currently has will definitely do wonders for the Squenix loving.

FFIV did quite well in the US and very well in Japan...so hopes are high for FFV and FFVI...But will we ever get any of the PS Final Fantasy games? Who knows...

EDIT: Oh and Mario Basket 3x3 is joint Nintendo-Square Enix...and there was supposedly a GC version being made as well, but I reckon IF it exists it'll be a Revolution game now, especially as only recently Official Nintendo Mag was treated to a new Rev demo in Japan...a BASKETBALL one! Smilie

Yeah i wonder what SE is gonna do once all the old Final Fantasies have been ported over, more original content maby?

XBL Gamertag: James2t3

I'd say it's about time a new Chrono game was made. It MUST have been in the planning stages for AGES now, since the name 'Chrono Break' was both registered and then expired over the past few years. Apparently the Japanese trademark for 'Chrono Brake' still exists, though...

Three Chrono games so far, two on the SNES (Trigger, Radical Dreamers), one on the PSone (Cross). Will the fourth be a DS game? My money says yes...

Really wish that some of the Japanese-only SNES games would get remade, like Treasure Hunter G and Bahamut Lagoon.

Children of Mana and FF3 are must gets for me.
Especialy with the multiplayer co-op aspexs.

"So no news on FFCC2? ."

Its been confirmed for revolution.
We will therefor probably see it at E3.
Its the DS version I am puzzled about...maybe it has major Revolution link up, thus they havnt revealed it yet.

I sure hope that SE decide to give more FF to Nintendo consoles, it would be completely awesome to get FFVII on Revo or DS, I could shout in EVERYONE's face who said it was impossible!! Smilie I'm praying it happens, but I'm not holding my breath!!

I've never played any Chrono games, but I hope to pick it up for the SNES downloads on VC, I hope I can Smilie it would be cool if SE ressurected an old series like that. By the way, does anyone think that a proper Kingdom Hearts or Star Ocean game will ever appear on Nintendo? Smilie

Hey Jesusraz, how did you know that ONM played a basketball game for Revo?

I also hope that Mother 1-3 may see the western light of day! Nintendo has always lacked RPGs, do they know how popular they are in the west?! Smilie

Twitter | C3 Writer/Moderator | Backloggery

Earthbound (Mother 2) did quite well in the US and Nintendo DID consider translating the GBA duo of Mother 1+2, but ditched the idea, along with Magical Vacation, Custom Robo, GiFTPiA and Legend of Starfi for some strange reason. But word at the moment is that Nintendo is SERIOUSLY considering translating Mother 3...

ONM's first issue had details of the demos they played and the b-ball one was new. Just an educated guess about the Squenix involvement, so I could be way off the mark Smilie

Star Ocean for the SNES deserves to be ported to at least the GBA...since Star Ocean: Blue Sphere on the GBC wasn't ever ported, either.

poo, no kingdom hearts DS. Smilie

I reckon it's only a matter of time before the DS gets a KH spin off like GBA did with KH:COM

Also, wouldn't it make sense to have Mother 1 & 2 ported too if Mother 3 was?

Twitter | C3 Writer/Moderator | Backloggery

DSx2 FF3

DSx2 have some new FF3 screens and i noticed they were in english! :O

XBL Gamertag: James2t3

i'm thinking that the KH series are exclusive to Sony and it's systems. I'm guessing ninty only gets spin-offs which is a shame, really. I'm going to have to wait for the PS2's price to go down to truly have KH 1 and 2. Smilie

Holy moly mole cow!! Smilie

I jus' realised that there is a Black Mage & a White Mage in those pics of FFIII!! It would be cool to have a Black Mage with an adult attitude, although Vivi is really cool too, it's great to see them making a comeback!! Smilie

Twitter | C3 Writer/Moderator | Backloggery

Nintendo needs Square Enix. I'm a bit hyped after just watching Final Fantasy VII Advent Children.

I'd like to see a "proper" Final Fantasy come to a Nitendo home console soon.

PSN: shiptoncraig
Steam: Guess what?

Well those black mages and white mages were fairly commen in the early Final Fantasy games.

XBL Gamertag: James2t3

Is that...Slime Mori Mori?

*JOY*

Surprised DQM Caravan Heart never made it over on the GBA as well, to be honest...
