Nintendo Interview | Opera Talks Final Wii Browser

By Adam Riley 01.03.2007 28

The final edition of the Wii Browser is expected in the near future, but so far we have no clue as to what will be included in that release. Opera has just been interviewed by Play Nintendo on exactly that subject. Here are some snippets from the discussion:

PN: So here's the big question; when will we be getting the full version of the browser to download on Wii?

Opera: Opera and Nintendo are planning the release for the final version of the browser for late March/early April.

PN: The biggest problem (Which is still very small) to do with the Opera browser is that typing can be very slow (especially for novices). There was a rumour that keyboard drivers were a possibility. Does that stand?

Opera: You will have to check with Nintendo on their plans to offer a keyboard. Opera would not be involved in this.

PN: Our last question is will there be any updates to the browser after this version, or is this it?

Opera: The browser for Wii will be regularly updated.

Be sure to check out the full interview: here.

Sounds good, I sure hope Nintendo do get around to making Keyboard support, as Wii is the console I've done the most typing for EVER. (If you don't consider PC a console)

Basically, GC had a Keyboard, Wii needs one badly, especially if it will have online play.

Can't wait for more on that.

Good to know they'll keep updating, as the damned flash player included is way too out of date right now.

True that, even though they don't need to, a lot of Flash artists use Flash Player 8 or higher because they can. Smilie

Updated regularly is good...hopefully they mean more then just flash, however.

The keyboard is a lie however :-/

Opera is a bit of software that runs on the Wii, the Wii has 2 USB ports at the back which standard keyboards can be plugged into.

They dont need to wait for Nintendo too release their own keyboard. They dont even have to wait for Nintendo too release a keyboard driver.
Worse comes to worse they just have to ASK Nintendo.

The situation at the moment I fear is Nintendo dosnt see the demand themselfs, and Opera dosnt have time to code the driver themselves.
~sigh~

So basically Nintendo aren't allowing them to do keyboard drivers.

What cunts.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

At least good to hear that they will keep the browser updated. Shame about the keyboard. More than likely they simply haven't bothered to take the time with it.

It's not exactly a big job.

Regardless, I doubt they are a very big team, and I doubt it is too high on their "to-do" list to offer support for a keyboard. Besides, I doubt Nintendo is encouraging them to do keyboard support either. They want people surfing using "the amazing and intuitive Wiimote!"

Awesome. As long as NIntendo release a keyboard with the full version of Opera then everything will be fine.

Lets all use the mouse on PC's for letters too then....the wiimote can still be used for mouse functions.

A wireless keyboard would be good, just stick a receiver into the USB ports on the back.

...I don't even understand what point you are trying to make here.

Yeah a keyboard would be great, but as I already said in my post, I doubt it is too high on their list of things to do, and I doubt Nintendo is encouraging it.

Your all too quick to blame Nintendo here.

I bet Opera hasnt even -asked-.

Also, I serverly dought Nintendo has written special usb-blocking stuff hardwired into the Wiis firmware.

Nintendo isnt "stoping" them.
Its just a question of who should spend the (relatively little) effort needed to make a keyboard driver.

USB keyboard support is such a blatantly obvious and near essential feature that the the only possible reason for not having it is that Nintendo don't want it. They don't want it because it destroys the incredibly remote chance of them releasing their own keyboard, which will never happen anyway.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Not in the least.

Nintendo stuck two industary-standard USB sockets on the back.

That would have been pointless if they didnt intend to support industary standards.

Its much more likely of a question of Opera not having the time or will power to write support.
(heck, maybe the team in charge of porting has no skill in that area)

Nintendo probably just cant be bothered to make a driver, or they havnt even thought of it.

Wii has Bluetooth. It doesn't need a dongle. It just needs a driver for plug and play Bluetooth accessories. Or, even, a Bluetooth channel where you can pair your phone and put the photos you take into the photo channel, or stream music from your phone whilst messing with Miis, or show a slideshow of photos from your phone to someone across the world with the message board feature.

Nothing too difficult there, Nintendo!

A keyboard will definitely come from Nintendo soon enough any adaptaions for integration of keyboard configuration will come via updates to the browser, that aside the browser had better be a vast improvement on what is already available otherwise i will be using the new version through wiifinder.com. I meant as in, you say they want to promote the Wiimote for this, but there can still be keyboard support while the Wiimote acts as a mouse. I was making the point that it's analogous to using a mouse on a computer to "type" when there's a much more sensible option.

See, if Nintendo were smart, they'd have a unified text entering interface like the 360 does. Developers can call a function that displays a keyboard that's controllable by the pad or keyboard and returns a text string. See, that's smart.

Dudes, how long has the Wii been out Worldwide?

3 months....

Let's calm down a bit.

Yeah you tell them Uzumaki Smilie throw some shuriken at them!! Smilie

Anyway good news i wasnt expecting the full browser til July!

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

Why is this relevant apart from to assert that the Wii was rushed to launch without many of it's hyped features ready?

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

& the 360 wasn't? Smilie

Twitter | C3 Writer/Moderator | Backloggery

Yeah typing is a bitch

I Doubt that its gonna be free, and in that note i wont be getting it, i've had the trial version since christmas day (when i got it obviously) and must have used it twice..so i dont really care

Examples?

Anyway so what? I think most people would agree that the 360 was rushed too much to launch, including me. It did everything they said it would though.
