Nintendo DS Media | Runaway 2 Hands-On Video

By Adam Riley 01.07.2007 7

The excellent Runaway 2 on PC from Cyanide Studio is coming to the DS in all its original glory thanks to a new codec from Nintendo that will allow the 7GB of content to be translated across with ease. A new video, that strangely has no sound, shows how well it looks on the portable and can be seen below [ may take a while to load, please be patient ]:

Expect more details as its late 2007 release draws ever closer...

Shame about there being no sound. But it is pretty incredible that they were supposedly able to shove 7GB of content unto a DS card. That's incredible in itself.

Is FFVII really too much of a stretch of the imagination now?

Add me on anything. I'm always looking for new friends/opponents/town visitors/chances to appear more popular than I actually am.

What is this 7GB crap? You can't mean MBs, I think you are talking about MBit right? 128MB, that's what the DS cartridges are going with these days, most of them only at 64mb.

They aren't talking about raw data. As you said, a DS card holds no more than 128 MB at maximum. I believe it is talking about a new compression method. So it is not crazy to believe that a lot of data can be compressed to a smaller package. Most N64 games weigh in at around 12 MB (unless I am mistaken), so if ten years ago they could get large games compressed to that size, I imagine things have advanced in leaps and bounds since then.

Akage: There are 7 GB worth of data from the PC-version of Runaway2, meaning video and game-content like engine and scripts. They are now able (so they say) to compress all that to DS-cartridge-usage-niveau.
Runaway on PC comes on DVD with 6.8 GB of data (at least that's what the DVD-9 can handle).

/edit: Did you know, that they want to do a version for DS and Wii with 'Secret File Tunguska', too? German magazine 'Gamepro' (www.gamepro.de) says in their print-magazine, that a Wii-version of it will come 1/2008, while the DS-version comes at 4/2007. Does Runaway 2 come for Wii too?

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

We've reported on Secret Files Tunguska for Wii and DS...which is great news! Whether or not Runaway will come to Wii as well, I have no idea. I'll try and contact the developer about it, though Smilie

"As you said, a DS card holds no more than 128 MB at maximum."

Not true actualy.
Thats *probably* the max size for a cart at the moment from Nintendo, but its not the max size a cart can be.

Already homebrew cards can go vastely bigger, so obviously, if nintendo wanted to release bigger cards they could to.

Given current SD prices, 512MB cards could be affordable now, for instance.

Given the success of the DS, I fully expect by the end of its life to see GB cards and above.

" Most N64 games weigh in at around 12 MB (unless I am mistaken),"

12MB indeed.
Some even less.

Also ,remember, a DS only has to render to a fraction of a size of a tv.
