Mizuguchi: Anxious About Wii Plans

By Adam Riley 24.01.2008 8

Quick News - Former Sega man, Tetsuya Mizuguchi, now head of Q Entertainment, has stated he has no plans to support Wii yet as he is worried about Nintendo being too strong on the system. As for a Space Channel 5 remake, it will be considered if reason to do so arises.

This sort of comment really bugs me. The reason Nntendo is so strong on the system is due to the quality games they produce. If third parties want a peice of the action then maybe they should put more time into producing games of the same quality

While that's true. There is evidence to his statements...Zack and Wiki, No More Heroes and countless of other decent third party games. I mean Mario Party 8 sells well and it's trash. You can kind of see where they're coming from.

I would have thought Sega will be making a lot more profit on Sonic & secret rings, Mario & Sonic Olympics than their high def games.

Now it's been shown that the Wii is hitting a more mature audience than the 360 and PS3, as it has a much higher average age and much higher percentage of women owners I'm really surprised that noone seems to be aiming towards this market. Making games that are challenging, interesting, but not filled with sweaty, muscley marines shooting aliens (despite this being described as mature in computer game circles it is not) or cartoon, sweet, childish design.

Zack and Wiki appears like it could have been like this if they'd have kept the levels the same, style the same, but just changed the characters to be a bit more universally appealing, ie the main character could have been a young adult, mid 20s with a less silly sidekick.

Wii sports does well at this because it isn't injected with testosterone to appeal to lads or childish, hence it appeals to everyone.

I agree.

@tiamat1990,

Capcom did not advertise Zak and Wiki. That was the problem with its sales. No More Heroes is selling better than Killer 7 and most other Suda 51 produced games. Furthermore for the month of December the Wii had an 8 to 1 software to console ratio. That was higher than the Xbox 360 ( NPD data).

Third party software is doing well on the Wii. But if this guy does not want to take the chance then that's his loss. The Wii has a 20 million user fanbase which is more divers than any other home console. All most any game, with an advertising budget, can be successful.

as he is worried about Nintendo being too strong on the system.

As James Bond stated it: Heads of companies change, lies stays the same...
What is this guy? Chicken? Build great software, let franchises grow over the years and you will sell your software, too.
Nintendo has 25 years of franchises to sell core games to us.
But what with Touch! Generation? Nintendo opened that market, and from scratach, too. If it can do something like that, everyone can.
It's about doing great things and earning a lot of money. That's okay. eArning money with mediocre shit like Microsoft or EA is something Tetsuya Miziguchi seem to want to do. But that's exactly what brought SEGA into struggle. Okay, Sega released far shitier shit then Microsoft with Sonic's Not-Wii-Games and Nights - Journey into Dreams.
Quality sales. And sex. But sex isn't Q's and Sega's thing. So do quality. Okay, that's not Segas thing either...

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

Well, it's money we are talking about here, of course he'll be scared. But to get more, need to take some risk.

Just a note. Capcom believe Zack & Wiki is doing well and as expected. It's a new IP in a niche genre that is rare on consoles. They wouldn't have expected it to sell in the millions, no matter the quality.
