Nintendo Responds to Smash Bros. Disc Issues

Nintendo UK has responded to recent disc issues plaguing Smash Bros. Brawl owners.

In the forums there have been problems with discs not running on European machines - due to possible dust on lenses.

If you have recently purchased Super Smash Bros. Brawl and are experiencing technical problems playing the game on your Wii, please read the following information to learn how this issue can be resolved.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl utilities a double-layer disc which has a large memory capacity. A very small percentage of Wii consoles may have trouble consistently reading data off this large capacity disc if there is some contamination on the lens of the disc drive. Nintendo has specialised cleaning equipment that can resolve this problem. Please do NOT attempt to clean the lens yourself, as you may damage the system.

If you are experiencing disc read errors, please contact consumer Support. They will provide information regarding sending your Wii to Nintendo to have the disc drive lens cleaned. There is no cost for the repair or shipping. (Please note: Returning the disc to the retail store will not solve the problem. We encourage users who are experiencing issues with playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl to utilise Nintendo's repair service.)

Due to the nature of this particular issue, Wii owners should not lose any of their stored data, such as Virtual Console games and WiiWare software. In some rare cases you may have to re-download this software from the Wii Shop Channel, but there is no cost to doing so.

I've not had any problems with loading Smash Bros and I've had my console since day 1.

But I think if it's a problem with the Wii COnsole rather then the game there isn't much else Nintendo could do other then what they are doing.

No problems here. Just long loading times, but I assume that works as intended.

Loading times are longer if you change characters or costumes a lot on the character select screen XD

If you stay as the same character for a fes matches it'll load faster.

The actual percentage of people having a problem is less than 1% in Japan (last I heard), and way smaller in the rest of the world (lot's of smokers in Japan, and most people live in large dense cities like Tokyo).

And, yeah, the load times in Brawl seem very long (big complicated levels in particular). That doesn't have anything to do with the dirty lens problem...Brawl just takes a long time to load stuff. If you have a dirty lens, it will just fail to load.

BTW, the 360 RROD problems affected about 30% of the first gen X360's, and still affects around 10% of the current generation.

Wow, some people just look for the smallest things to complain about!

This was a non-issue when the game was released in Canada. The fact that Nintendo acknowledges that a small percentage of people might have a problem is a great sign that they understand customer service and are willing to act instead of react.

It might be a hit to their pr image but they are doing the right thing in issuing the warning. (That and they don\'t want people returning the game for a refund!)

I have had the Wii for 18 months and have had one disc drive problem (it was not SSBB related). They fixed and returned my console in LESS than a week. (Note: my seagate hard drive has been gone for 40 days and still no return in sight).

I\'ll star anybody in the UK who has a SSBB lens problem and isn\'t treated right by Nintendo!

Yeah, you guys are quick with shouting 'Wii/Nintendo is rubbish'. If a lens get dirty there are a lot of reasons. From contaminated areas to not cleaning the house to inserting dirty disks, which spin down their dust right into Wii's inner parts (It's called centrifugal force and... man I am a cheaptalker go away! okay, that's said) to many other kinds of things.

Wii isn't at all a cheap console. It's a highly integrated piece of solid hardware, very heavy and a lot of space internally made to use. lift your Wii, you cann kill people by ramming it on your big brother's head!). imho much cheaper, meaning made with more standard-equipment, is X360. The lens, being smaller, hasn't just about the same tolerance for jitters then ...say: x360. PS3 uses blue ray, it even has to be manifactured more precise and - by the way - was the reason there was a massive shortage of PS3s for launch (didn't matter, since no one bought one. *lol*).

So DL-disks are much more difficult to read, since the laser has to refocus for the second layer. So contamination of the lens is much more imminent on DL-disks. By the way, SSBB isn't the first DL-game as far as I know.

I think cleaning the lens at absolutely no cost for you is a very fine move of Nintendo. they covered the lens enough - I think - for normal dusting, so technically it isn't a fault on their side. But they attend to the flaw in their design. That's not bad of them, really!
Sure, giving away your Wii for weeks to be sent to Nintendo isn't great. But they do the things they are able to.

It would be much nicer, indeed, if they visit you at home and clean the lens there.

I find your lack of faith disturbing!
